When Survival Becomes Strength

They call me strong as if it is a medal I should wear,
as though resilience was a gift and not a burden born of fear.
As though I woke one morning and decided I would be
the person who could carry what would bring another to their knees.

But I did not choose this strength.
It chose me when there was no other way.
When life kept stacking weight upon my shoulders day by day.
When falling apart required time I simply did not own,
so I learned to build a fortress out of being left alone.

There are cracks inside of me I never knew could form,
fractures excavated only after weathering the storm.
I have carried grief I could not stop long enough to comprehend,
buried pain beneath responsibility and promised I would tend
to it later, when the crisis passed, when everything was still.
But later kept retreating while another burden climbed the hill.

I have picked myself up from places I never thought I would fall,
stood inside the wreckage wondering if I could rise at all.
Then somehow found the fragments, gathered every scattered part,
and reconstructed something resembling my former heart.
Not because I felt courageous. Not because I was unafraid.
But because there was no rescue coming, no one else to take my place.

And yes, it made me stronger.
I know what I can withstand.
I know how to build a future with destruction in my hands.
But I never wanted wisdom purchased through survival’s cost.
I never wanted strength defined by everything I lost.

I never wanted to discover how much pain a soul can hold,
how quickly tenderness can harden when the world becomes too cold.
I never wanted life to test the limits of my spine,
then praise me for endurance as though suffering were divine.

Strength does not mean never breaking.
I have shattered more than once.
It means kneeling in the pieces and deciding to reconstruct.
It means learning every fracture, every weakness, every seam,
then rebuilding something stronger from the rubble of a dream.

It means showing up for others while exhaustion fills my bones,
answering their calls while barely managing my own.
It means becoming someone’s shelter while my roof begins to bend,
holding everyone together while pretending I do not need a hand.

I am always the one who figures it out.
The one who finds a way.
The one who swallows panic because something must be saved.
The one who makes the plan when every plan has fallen through,
who says, “I’ll handle it,” because that is what I always do.

And people call that admirable.

Sometimes it is.

But sometimes strength is simply what remains when choice is gone,
when you learn no one is coming and you still have to move on.
When life keeps handing you another weight before you catch your breath,
and somehow you keep carrying it because surrender feels like death.

I did not become resilient because I wanted to be brave.
I became resilient because there was no one coming to save
the woman underneath the armor, the child beneath the skin,
the person who kept begging life to finally let her win.

So I saved myself.

Again.
Again.
Again.

Not beautifully.
Not gracefully.
Not without scars that never mend.

I crawled when I could not walk.
I whispered when I could not scream.
I held myself together with whatever remained between
the person I had been before and who I had to become
when life kept taking pieces and I refused to come undone.

So when you call me strong, understand what that word contains.

It contains nights I survived alone.
It contains unprocessed pain.
It contains the thousand moments when collapsing would have been
the most human thing imaginable, but I could not let myself give in.

I am strong.

But not because I never broke.

I am strong because I shattered,
learned the architecture of every crack,
and built myself again.

And again.

And again.

Not because I wanted to.

Because life gave me no choice
but to become
the person who always came back.

Courage Over Caution

Choose courage over caution,
even when your hands still shake.
Even when the road is unfamiliar,
even when there is something to break.

Pack the boxes. Leave the city.
Trade the known for something new.
Let uncertainty become a doorway
instead of something chasing you.

Speak the truth when silence is safer.
Say the thing they hoped you’d hide.
Let your voice become the evidence
that fear does not decide.

Take the date you know may fail.
Board the plane. Walk through the door.
Let yourself be foolish enough
to wonder if there could be more.

Not every risk becomes a triumph.
Not every leap becomes a flight.
Sometimes courage ends in heartbreak.
Sometimes bravery gets it wrong.

But caution has its consequences too.

There are lives we never live,
people we never know,
versions of ourselves we never meet
because fear convinced us not to go.

And maybe that is the greater loss:

not falling,
not failing,
not being bruised—

but reaching the end
and realizing how often
you refused.

So let your pulse race.
Let your certainty bend.
Let beginnings look nothing
like how you imagined the end.

Take the first step
before you know where it leads.

Courage has never required certainty.
Only movement.

Only faith.

Only the willingness
to choose experience
over fear,

and finally discover
what waits
on the other side
of almost.

Chameleon Hearts

I do not know why I cannot let you go,
when you are everything I promised I would never choose.
You carry every warning sign I know,
every kind of love I swore I would refuse.

We have almost nothing in common,
and somehow, we are painfully the same.
Two chameleons changing with the room,
shifting colors just to hear someone say our name.

We learned how to become what others needed,
how to bend before they ever asked us to.
Desperate to be wanted, to be chosen,
to make ourselves enough for someone new.

But you became controlling beneath the charm,
arrogance disguised as certainty and grace.
Careless with the hearts you held too loosely,
always keeping one more option in its place.

You cheated truth before you cheated trust.
You played your games and called them circumstance.
Indecision became another weapon,
keeping me suspended in the hope of chance.

And I know what loving you would cost me.

I would have to soften every boundary,
silence pieces of myself you could not bear.
I would have to shrink to fit your expectations,
change my shape until I disappeared in there.

I refuse.

I have spent too many years becoming
someone I can finally recognize.
I will not trade the woman I have fought for
just to become pleasing to your eyes.

So tell me why my heart still reaches backward.

Why does logic lose its voice when memory speaks?
Why can one remembered moment resurrect you
after I have spent whole months becoming free?

Maybe I do not miss you.

Maybe I miss who I became beside you.
The version of myself who felt enough.
The way you listened like my words were sacred,
the way your attention masqueraded as love.

You made me feel seen
in places I had hidden.

You made me feel chosen
before you made me disappear.

And maybe that is why the wound stays open:
you gave me everything I wanted most to hear.

Then you lied.

You left.

You erased me
with astonishing precision.

As though I had been nothing
but a temporary decision.

And that is what I cannot reconcile.

How someone can memorize the smallest parts of you,
hold your secrets like they matter,
build a future out of careful words,
then walk away
as though there was never anything to shatter.

The cruelest part is knowing
you already knew.

While I was falling,
you were calculating the landing.

While I was building something permanent,
you were already planning your abandoning.

You had an ending
hidden in your pocket
while I was still believing in the start.

And I was foolish enough
to call your architecture fate
while you were quietly designing
how to break my heart.

I hate that I believed you.

I hate that somewhere underneath the anger,
there is still tenderness I cannot kill.

I hate that knowing exactly who you are
has never taught my heart
how not to want you still.

Because you are everything I do not want.

And somehow,
you became the thing
I cannot forget.

A contradiction
wearing the face of a memory.

A lesson
I understand completely
and have not learned yet.

Perhaps that is our final similarity:

Two chameleons
desperate to be loved.

Only I am finally learning
that love should never require
changing color
until no trace of you
remains.

A Stranger Within Myself

Deep inside is a hidden me
One that no one knows
Sometimes not even myself
Outside, I’m perfectly crafted to others

This has always been my philosophy
Surrounded by others, deep in echoes
All while the true me is stationed on the shelf
Whom will I be next? I’ll slowly discover

A chameleon trying to find safety
Looking through other people’s windows
Moving with stealth
Hoping one day I’ll recover

Showcases of myself through the cracks
Of the masquerade presented to crowds
A moment of introspection on pride
To be lost in the chaos of the facade

Only for those we match to betray us
Leaving those who mask left in shrouds
Waiting for life’s next guide
And for me to become the next fraud

The only way I’ll build trust
Is to become those that resound
While the real me stays inside
Only to be ever flawed
