If you had told me a few years ago that I would willingly spend my money on basketball tickets, get excited about game day, and have favorite WNBA players, I probably would have laughed at you. Basketball and I have a history, and not a particularly good one.
I played basketball in middle school, and when I say “played,” I’m being generous. I was short, out of shape, and honestly, not very good. Then, to really seal my relationship with the sport, a basketball hit me directly in the face, and I ended up benched for the rest of the season. After that, basketball and I pretty much parted ways.
For years, I did not care about it. I didn’t watch games, follow teams, or pay attention to the basketball season. Then the Indiana Fever happened, and somehow, against all odds, they made me absolutely love basketball again.
Going to an Indiana Fever Game Is an Experience
Watching a game on television is one thing, but being inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse for an Indiana Fever game is completely different. The minute you walk in, there is an energy that is hard to explain unless you have experienced it.
People wear jerseys, take pictures, grab food, buy merchandise, talk about their favorite players, and wait for the team to hit the court. Kids are excited. Adults are excited. Everyone feels like they are there for something bigger than just a random night out.
Then the music starts, and let me tell you, whoever is responsible deserves a raise. The music is spectacular. It is fun, loud, nostalgic, current, and exactly what you want playing when thousands of people are packed into an arena waiting for something exciting to happen.
Even during breaks in the game, there is almost always something going on. Contests, giveaways, fan interactions, dancing, music, and things happening on the big screen keep it moving. You have very little time to sit there wondering when the game will start again because the entire night feels like an event.
The Crowd Makes It Even Better
The crowd is one of my favorite parts of the whole experience. Something about being surrounded by thousands of people who are all emotionally invested in the same thing.
You hear the crowd start building when Caitlin has the ball. You feel people react when Kelsey gets going. You hear the entire arena lose its mind over a great defensive play or a big three-pointer. Before you know it, you are cheering with strangers like you have known them forever.
That atmosphere is part of what keeps me coming back. You can watch the same play from your couch, but you cannot recreate the feeling of an entire arena realizing what is about to happen at the same time. There is this split second of anticipation before everyone erupts, and I absolutely love it.
I Have Become Way Too Attached to This Team
This might actually be the problem. I love this group of players, and I am already aware that professional sports teams change. Players get traded, contracts end, rosters evolve, and eventually the exact team you fell in love with is not going to look the same.
I do not care. I’ll still be sad when it happens.
Something about this group made basketball fun for me again. I love watching Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, Sophie Cunningham, and the rest of this team play together. I love the chemistry, the personalities, and the energy they bring to the court.
Kelsey is electric. Aliyah has this presence that makes you pay attention. They both bring so much to the team, and I love watching what they add to every game. But Caitlin and Sophie are definitely the two players I have become the most attached to.
Caitlin and Sophie Are a Huge Part of Why I Love This Team
Caitlin is probably the biggest reason I started paying attention to the Fever in the first place. There is just something about the way she plays that makes the game feel exciting every single time she has the ball. You are always waiting to see what she is going to do next, whether it is a deep three, a ridiculous pass, or one of those moments where she completely changes the energy of the arena.
I also love that she has brought so many new people into women’s basketball. I am one of them. She made me curious enough to watch, and then she made me care enough to stay.
There is something special about watching a player who makes the entire arena feel like anything could happen at any moment. Even when she is not scoring, you are still watching because she can completely shift the game with one play.
And then there is Sophie.
I absolutely love Sophie Cunningham.
She has the kind of personality that makes you want to root for her even harder. She is fiery, funny, fearless, and unapologetically herself. I love the attitude she brings to the court and the way she never seems afraid to show emotion.
She has an edge that makes every game more entertaining, and I love players who make it obvious how much they care. There is something fun about watching someone who does not seem interested in shrinking herself or toning down her personality to make other people comfortable.
What I love most about Caitlin and Sophie is that they make basketball feel fun to me. Caitlin gives me the excitement and anticipation. Sophie gives me the personality and fire. They are completely different, but that is part of what makes watching them together so enjoyable.
I know sports teams change. I know players get traded, contracts end, and rosters do not stay the same forever. But this version of the Fever has become special to me, and Caitlin and Sophie are a huge part of that.
If they are ever no longer on the same team, I already know I’ll be way more emotional about it than I probably should be.
Gainbridge Fieldhouse Is Gorgeous
I also have to talk about Gainbridge Fieldhouse itself because I genuinely love it. The building is beautiful and has so many little architectural details that make it feel like more than just a giant arena with seats shoved inside.
It is spacious, bright, and easy to walk around. One of the biggest things I notice every time I go is how clean everything feels. That matters to me, especially when you are spending several hours somewhere surrounded by thousands of people.
The bathrooms are clean, the common areas are well maintained, and the whole place feels well cared for. It never has that gross, sticky, overcrowded feeling that some large venues can have. It makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
And Then There Is the Food
I am not someone who wants one sad concession stand serving hot dogs and nachos. I want options, and Gainbridge Fieldhouse has plenty.
Part of the fun is honestly wandering around and figuring out what you want to eat because there are so many choices throughout the building. Sometimes I want traditional game food. Sometimes I want something completely different. Sometimes I want snacks. Sometimes I apparently need to spend an embarrassing amount of money because I convince myself that calories consumed at a basketball game don’t count.
It is basically science. Do not question it.
Having so many food choices also makes going with other people easier because everyone can usually find something they like. You are not stuck trying to convince your whole group to settle for the same thing.
The Giveaways Are Actually Fun
Another thing the Fever do really well is giveaways. They aren’t always boring little promotional items that disappear into a junk drawer. I have gotten things that I actually wanted to keep, and that makes certain game nights even more fun.
Something is exciting about walking into the arena already looking forward to the game and then realizing you are getting something extra too. It is a small thing, but it adds to the overall experience.
The themed nights, promotions, special items, and fan experiences also help make different games feel unique. You don’t feel like you are attending the same event every time, and I love that.
Family Nights Are Such a Good Deal
If you are going with family, the Fever’s Family Nights are especially fun. I love that you can already have the experience of going to a Fever game and then get extra perks added on top of it.
The family-night packages can include food, souvenirs, and special fan experiences, which makes the night feel like more than just buying a ticket and sitting in a seat. That is especially great for families because those little extras are the kinds of things kids remember.
Honestly, adults remember them too. I am an adult, and I still get excited about free stuff.
Somewhere Along the Way, I Became a Basketball Fan
I think that is my favorite part of all of this. I did not go into it expecting to fall in love with basketball again. I had written the sport off a long time ago.
In my mind, basketball meant middle school, being terrible at sports, running until I thought I was going to die, and getting smacked in the face with a ball. Those were not exactly fond memories.
But somewhere between the music, the crowd, the players, the cheering, the three-pointers, the giveaways, the food, and everything else that happens during a Fever game, that changed.
Now I get excited when I know I am going. I want to know who is playing. I have players I root for. I understand more of what is happening. I yell at questionable calls like I personally have years of professional basketball expertise.
Apparently getting hit in the face with a basketball in middle school has uniquely qualified me to critique WNBA officiating. Who knew?
If You Have Never Been to a Fever Game, Go
Seriously, even if you are not a huge basketball fan. Actually, maybe especially if you are not a huge basketball fan, because I was not.
You do not have to understand every rule or know every player. You do not have to have watched basketball your entire life. Just go and experience it.
Enjoy the music. Eat the food. Take in the crowd. Get ridiculously invested in a game you told yourself you did not care about. Cheer, take pictures, grab the giveaway, and enjoy the entire atmosphere.
Maybe, like me, you will walk out realizing that somewhere during those few hours, you became a basketball fan.
I do not know how long this exact Fever team will stay together. That is the unfortunate part of sports. But I do know I will always have a soft spot for this era of the Indiana Fever because Caitlin, Kelsey, Aliyah, Sophie, and this team did more than give me something fun to watch.
They gave me basketball back.
And considering basketball once literally hit me in the face, I would say that is a pretty impressive comeback.
